Future climate projections are of enormous social economic
interest, particularly in developing countries where economies
often rely heavily on agriculture that is most directly influenced
by climate change and variability. The change in climate would have
a direct bearing on the rice productivity and, therefore, the
magnitude of this change in climate and its consequences on
regional scale will be matter of great concern for all so as to
regulate and sustain the food supply and to maintain its reserves
for the future. This master dissertation is divided into six
chapters highlighting the rationale of the study along with
objectives; compilation of relevant literature indicating the
present status of the problem; detailed account of research
methodology used; findings of the study along with tables, graphs
and illustrations; discussion about the results and their
interpretation and summary and conclusions of the research work. In
the last, bibliography has been given. This book of master's
dissertation will especially prove a useful reference tool for
researchers to assess the impact of climatic variability on
agricultural production on regional scale.
Soybean crop has seen phenomenal growth in area and production in
India in the recent decade. Future climatic change is likely to
have substantial impact on soybean production depending upon the
magnitude of variation in CO2 and temperature. Increased
temperature signi cantly reduces the grain yield due to accelerated
development and decreased time to accumulate grain weight.
Therefore, to explore the possibilities of introducing the crop
under new environments viz. arid, semi-arid regions and employing
options to sustain the soybean production under different
anticipated regional climate change scenarios; a research
experiment on weather responses in soybean crop grown under three
sowing dates using four soybean varieties (SH-40, PS-1042, PK-416
and DS-9814) was undertaken. It was concluded from the research
experiment that delay in sowing from May resulted in decline in
plant height, dry matter accumulation and yield among the
cultivars. Harvest index and attraction index were maximum in
PK-416 and lowest in SH-40. A differential decrease in LAI was
noted in four cultivars in later reproductive stages due to leaf
senescence.
The research work on dewfall and its impact on growth and yield of
Indian mustard crop grown with normal growing and terminal moisture
stress conditions under open and dew sheltered situations was
conducted. The total dew amount in the entire crop season ranged
between 95.99 mm in open irrigated crop and 92.51 mm in open
stressed crop. In dew sheltered conditions, the total dew amount
recorded was 3.52 mm in sheltered irrigated and 2.86 mm in
sheltered stressed crop. The meteorological parameters viz.,
evening relative humidity, minimum temperature and wind speed were
significantly associated with dew occurrence. Minimum temperature,
evening time relative humidity and wind speed parameters gave fair
estimate of dewfall. There were significant variations in dew
climatology in open and sheltered mustard crop. Input parameters
viz., minimum temperature, relative humidity (evening) and wind
speed gave a good estimate of dewfall, thus, may be used for
prediction of dew occurrence and subsequent management of dew
oriented plant protection measures in mustard crop in the region.
Global teleconnections have significant effects on regional
climate, economy and society around the world including India. The
long-range forecasting of the seasonal rainfall anomalies
associated with teleconnections is of paramount interest for
monsoon prediction and other associated climatic risks. Scientific
investigation entitled, "Regional monsoon dynamics and
teleconnections" was carried out for the meteorological
sub-division comprising of the provinces of Haryana, Delhi and
Chandigarh. The annual mean rainfall ranged 402.3 mm at Sirsa and
1122.4 mm at Chandigarh. Contribution of monsoon season was maximum
(77 to 82%) in annual rainfall. Strong relationship between
teleconnections and all India monsoon rainfall was observed. But,
this significant association was missing at different locations.
The regression models developed for prediction of location specific
monsoon rainfall overestimated the rainfall. The knowledge allows
the linkage between the regional monsoon rainfall anomalies, normal
rainfall cycle, and the circulation features associated with
teleconnections for fine tuning the prediction system for
sustainable agricultural development.
